Having been given a jelly roll and a quilting book for Christmas 2010, there is no excuse not to get on with quiltmaking.

Here's what happened next...

Unexpected Presents and a Miscalculation

Now if ever my colleague, Rita, comes into work with a big bag and the words, 'I've been having a bit of a clear out - before I take this lot to the charity shop, would you like...', then chances are that I am in for a treat.

This was definitely the case on Friday, when she gave me a bag containing these little beauties...

Wow! Wasn't that kind?

BUT, before I can consider my next step (do I feel a Country Charmer coming on, after all...?), I need to do two things.  Firstly, I need to finish off a Festive Mystery (and ideally get further along with line with mum's antique nine patch quilt).

And secondly, I really have to get my two crates of fabric under some sort of control (it's one of my 52 challenges) - at the moment, the fabrics are in no order, just bunged in, so if I want to look for anything, the whole lot gets emptied out.  Should I be sorting by size of fabric, or colour, I wonder - what does everyone else do?

Talking of a Festive Mystery, I finished piecing the back this evening, only to hit a snag - I clearly didn't double check the numbers closely enough, and the back is about 2" too small all the way round.

I think that I'll use the William Morris style fabric as a border, to make up the difference, then be careful to centre everything when it comes to putting the sandwich together.

Hmm.

  1. You could work on the fabric organization by starting the Country Charmer and doing it scrappy. How is that for two missions at once?

The William Morris will look lovely as a border on the backing. Happy quilting!

    1. You're not supposed to be tempting me into Country Charmer, Donna - I am trying very hard to resist!!

  2. Well done Rita!!

I organise my fabric by colour, mostly, although some fabrics are classified by type (all the batik is together for example, and all plains because I don't think they play nicely with prints) and there are some batches which have been put together to make a particular quilt ... which I know is never going to happen but I keep the grouping together for goodness knows what reason!

    1. I thing that some of the fabrics which are big pieces (enough for backings) can be put to one side, then in colours as you say. Hmm.

  3. PS: I have some of those fabrics, I think :} Definitely recognise the floral second from right.

  4. I love your new floral fabric. That's a pretty nice bit of stuff she was planning to get rid of. Lucky you.

    1. I think that Rita was a magpie in a previous life, she collects all sorts of 'useful bits'! She is very generous though, I know.

  5. I definitely see a Country Charmer quilt in your future...a great way to start organizing your abrics. I organize according to color, and further separate fabric into civil war type fabrics, modern, and everything else. Great idea for a pieced backing for festive mystery!

I see - fabric type as well as fabric colours. Hmm.

  6. I also organise mainly by colour, too many colours to be specific go in another pile along with anything a bit wayout. I'm with Bilbo on groupings I keep, but if you see my blog, they do come in handy 18 years later sometimes.

    1. Blog? Blog? You've sorted yourself out with a blog! Hurrah! I just need you to let me have the blog address...?

  7. I make it simple to organise - I don't have much of a stash! I open a cupboard, look at 2 shelves, and there it all is. I do have another shelf in there, where I have bagged up "kits" of fabrics needed for a WIP. I also don't have scraps - I give them away.

    2. I bet you have a very happy local quilt group/charity shop/quilting friends, Sue! Why don't I live closer!?

Perhaps between Sue's stash and yours, you make two 'normal' quilters, Bilbo...?!
