Having been given a jelly roll and a quilting book for Christmas 2010, there is no excuse not to get on with quiltmaking.

Here's what happened next...

Perseverance & Good News!

I am quite frugal by nature, so when Lesley extolled the virtues of the 6 1/2 " square Creative Grids ruler for trimming smaller blocks in the April installment of the Christmas Quiltalong, although it piqued my interest, I was just that bit too mean to put my hand in my pocket to the tune £9.95 to buy one at that point.

Actually, I was really tempted - and the cost included postage and packing too - but the minimum spend is £10 on the web site, so I would have to order something else too.  I was rather disgruntled about this - but I mentally put one on my shopping list for the next quilt show I go to as a MUST BUY.

I do really want one now! I have been in the attic room half the evening trimming my half square triangles for the Christmas Quiltalong - and I am only just half way through - it is  taking ages with my big unwieldy Creative Grids ruler, and the rest of the task would be a million times easier if I had the right tool for the job.

But in rather better news, I moved* the huge pile of ironing out of the way, and I found my bag of Unit A blocks. Hurrah!

Ready to go for June...

*that's moved as opposed to did, by the way

  1. Oh Hazel, if you lived closer, you could use my ruler! Hope you're having a wonderful weekend. Take a rest every once in awhile! So glad you found Unit A!

    1. I think the smaller ruler will be much less unwieldy than this big one, Lesley!

  2. I know, the rulers are big business in the quilting industry. And they come in a zillion sizes and shapes. So glad you found your bag of A's.

    1. And the amount of quilting 'stuff' for sale is worthy of a post of it's own - I might ask quilters what their three 'essential items' are for quilting!

  3. Did I ever give you the advice to choose a brand for your rulers and STICK TO IT.

A 6" ruler from Creative Grids will not measure exactly the same as a 6" one from, for example, Omnigrids. I know it doesn't make sense, and I am sure the mftrs would disagree but trust me on this one .....

And it is well worth you buying as many as you can manage - if you always use the smallest ruler you can for each cut you will find life easier and accurate.

BTW, all mine come from CG ... and ditto Lesley, sorry you are too far away to borrow.

    1. Yes, I remembered the advice on sticking to one brand, Bilbo, so I turned to the Creative Grids site as a matter of course - so I do listen (sometimes!) {g}

  4. Rulers are just like sewing machines - one 1/4" is different from another 1/4" for some reason. I have had a 61/2" ruler for years and love it. I dropped mine the other day and now have a chip on one corner, so might have to replace it soon.

I'm really glad you found your unit A's and didn't have to actually do the ironing to do so.

    1. Yes, in a neat manoeuvre, the ironing pile LOOKS smaller without me having to DO any of it! And I have all my blocks (nearly) ready to have a play around with layouts...

  5. Order the 6"x1" tiny ruler to go with your square, it is THE most useful ruler I have! You won't believe it until you have one :o).

    1. After a full year and three quilts made all just using the one big ruler, even *I* think I am allowed to invest in a smaller handy sized one, Mrs P!
