Having been given a jelly roll and a quilting book for Christmas 2010, there is no excuse not to get on with quiltmaking.

Here's what happened next...

Oh.

Colleague Rita points out that the lovely grey thread that I bought last week for the quilting doesn't stand out as much as it might.

Most irritatingly, I think that she is right.

So before I plough on any further with my FMQ stars, I'll give this darker grey thread a go - possibly the dark grey for the top thread & keep the paler grey for the bobbin thread.

If it looks better than the block and a half I've done, I can undo without too much bad language.

Bah.

  1. Careful, careful, I think we've been here before and the end result was an awful lot of unpicking ...

Recovering from a cold (= brain fog all week) but I have a sneaky feeling that early on in your quilting career we all had a discussion about the effect of a quilting thread which contrasts hugely with the quilt top. If you have any of the quilt top fabrics left, can I suggest you make up a sample block and do some experiments before you make a commitment to the actual quilt?

Shuffling back to the corner now ...

  2. Goodness me, Hobbit - that was a most timely intervention!!

Yes, you are quite right that the ol' pea brain had forgotton the pain of unpicking the overly dark quilting on Sure Steps!

And I was entirely poised with my unpicker for the FMQ stars - BUT instead, I will trial a couple of blocks with dark-grey-top, dark-grey-bottom and dark-grey-top, light-grey-bottom and then we can see what's to be done!

Thank you, m'dear - and *do* keep on the hot toddies/oodles of fresh air, and keep off the disproportionately hard labour for the time being?

  3. I don't really need to add anything here do I? Bilbo covered it with her suggestion of a trial block or two. That could save you a lot of heartache and handache from gripping the stitch ripper.
